National Gallery FPDC Award Winners - 01/02/2011

For the second year in succession G Jackson & Sons Ltd were awarded the Humber Silver Salver by the FPDC, for 2010, in recognition of their work on the National Gallery, Galleries 6 & 8. The work involved the re-establishment of the existing decorative Plasterwork damaged during the installation of lay-light ceilings during the 1960’s, this involved matching some existing work left in-situ and manufacturing complete new sections where the damage was beyond repair. Once again the FPDC judging panel commented upon Jackson’s attention to detail given to every aspect of the work installed. From the initial viewing when not all of the damage was evidenced the project appeared very straight forward however once all of the damage was exposed, it proved there was a considerable amount more work involved and the completion date got ever nearer. With their dedicated and skilled workforce G Jackson & Son’s Ltd succeeded on completing the works in a very tight twelve week programme with zero defects and to budget. Working together with Mr. Peter Griffiths from the Contractor Fairhurst Ward Abbotts Ltd and Mr. Peter Gooderham of Architects Purcell Miller Triton Jacksons re-created the Cartouche, that had been very badly damaged in Gallery 8, at their workshop in Sutton before returning two new Cartouche’s for installing at either end of Gallery 8.

Mr. Charles Ross, Head of Building & Facilities at the National Gallery commented “I have had dealings with Jacksons for the last 30 years and know of their vast experience, a commitment to the highest standards and the outstanding quality of their workmanship, there has been nothing but praise for the quality of the refurbishment”.

Mr. Peter Griffiths, Project Manager for Fairhurst Ward Abbotts comments “I was gratefully relieved we had procured a specialist with such history and a pedigree in this field of work, that if not chosen correctly, could have seriously compromised this important element of work”.
